Our firm members attended the ” Lion-Hunting and Lion-Roaring: The Public Order and Police Act Incident” event

On February 23, 2024, our firm members attended the event titled ” Lion-Hunting and Lion-Roaring: The Public Order and Police Act Incident” at the Taiwan New Cultural Movement Memorial Museum. The gathering focused on discussions about the reflections and prospects that the Public Order and Police Act Incident brought to lawyers.

On December 16, 1923, the Office of the Governor-General of Taiwan launched an island-wide arrest against those involved in the “League for the Establishment of a Taiwanese Parliament”. Prosecutors then charged 18 people with violating the “Public Order and Police Act”. This event was known as the ” Public Order and Police Act Incident “. On July 25, 1924, the first trial was held with a defense team consisting of 8 lawyers, with Yeh Ching-yao, being the only Taiwanese lawyer and also the first Taiwanese lawyer to participate in defending a political case. The Public Order and Police Act Incident showed the dual identity of Taiwanese lawyers during the Japanese colonial period – they were both businessmen in the commercial society and able to use legal expertise to pursue human rights. Commemorating the history of Taiwanese lawyers is important to accumulate legal profession.

After the visit, we went to the King Plaza Hotel for a spring banquet, enjoying the unique historical cuisine.
